SALA Festival 2023
DATE: Oct 7 and 8, 2023, | 11 am to 7 pm.
VENUE: Menlo College, 1000 El Camino Real, Atherton, CA 94027.
Changing Narratives
Since its beginning in 2019, the SALA festival has highlighted and celebrated contemporary art coming from the South Asian diaspora and has focused on social and cultural issues that are close to the heart of the community.
In the year 2023 the festival focused on the complicated theme of the changing narratives within the South Asian Diaspora. We looked beyond the stereotypes of the South Asian community to examine how our narrative is changing and how we are changing the narrative.
We presented thought-provoking and stimulating keynote speakers such as Abraham Verghese,
Amitav Ghosh, Shobhaa De, and Konkana Sen Sharma.
The festival, the largest gathering of creative minds, included 22 panel discussions, held over two days. Contemporary voices such as Chitra Ganesh, Sonora Jha, Ranjit Hoskote, and Soniah Kamal covered diverse topics such as identity, human rights, gender, class, dating, and cricket. Art Forum presented this festival in partnership with the Stanford University Center for South Asia; UC Santa Cruz Center for South Asian Studies and UC Berkeley Institute for South Asian Studies.
It was a great opportunity for young minds to immerse themselves into this important conversation while celebrating the contemporary south asian culture.
